Safari To Go App Reviews

Promising, needs work

Looking at C++ Primer Plus 6 by Prata for just a minute: n in sample code turns into an actual new line inside strings. Carrots code sample is clipped, missing two lines at the bottom. Back to the web view, which doesnt have those problems.

Really enjoying this

Im using this app on iPad to access my Creative Edge account and it works flawlessly. Not quite sure why some other users gave past versions such bad reviews as Ive never had a single issue. The app perfectly syncs titles, bookmarks, lists, page positions, etc. with the Web app. Love the new UI. Well done.

3.0 is much better than the older version.

And like to have a iPhone version as well.

Now on iPhone

Great to have this on iPhone now. Dont have to use the web version which was a pain to navigate sometimes. Really useful to be able to download for offline reading (3 books at a time).

Great update, much improved browsing

A safari books subscription is a must for anyone in the computer science industries. Books are revised and technologies are rapidly becoming dated in this field and to maintain your edge staying current is a must. Very affordable compared to purchasing paperback oreilly books etc.. The updated app works great and is now more intuitive and easier to use.

Offline content useless when network is unavailable

The application goes crazy when going through a tunnel while reading a book from your offline Bookbag; it starts going back and forth between your current page and previously read page in a different chapter.

Very Buggy

This app crashes often, especially when trying to manage book lists. If a book is added to the offline folder it can never be re-added. Not impressed.

Great content, meh app

Safari Books Online has a great selection of books. However, the app is somewhat lacking. The thing I most miss is the ability to keep annotations on the books - whats the point of a bookmark if I cant say what piqued my interest in a particular page? Offline is a bit buggy - if it gives you trouble clear your cache. Formatting is sometimes a bit buggy, but I can appreciate that depends on the source books content being used.

A good on-the-go reference

The only improvement I would suggest is for the ability to annotate text within the app.

Nice app, but...

The app is nice, but using an ACM account to log in (for which you have to go to the ACM site, from there to Safari and from there to the app) is a pain. Add to that that the app doesnt stay logged in, so you have to jump through those hoops fairly often, and it becomes an annoyance. The app is actually more useful when no networks are available or networking is turned off, because then it allows you direct access to offline books without having to log in. Still a nuisance to turn off WiFi and cellular data when I want to continue reading, but actually less of a nuisance than jumping through the hoops to log in. It would be great if it could just remember my login for at least 30 days or so, or allow for a more direct way to log in...

E for effort

Crashes. Fail at user feedback: tap without highlight and with long delay until something happens. Fail at saving state: doesnt reopen the last open book.

F for fails to download on iPad

Wont download and from what I hear it crashes if you can get it to.

Needs Improvement

Clunky and broken navigation throughout, especially trying to browse books topic and category, for example some subcategories dont work if you tap on them. Videos are particularly bad, no way to browse videos, can only find videos if you know the exact name to search, videos often load with only sound and no picture and you have to restart the app. Its almost a deal breaker if you prefer to use iPad to access the service. For $500/year Id expect a first class app, not something that feels like it was written by a single developer with no quality assurance or usability testing. The Oreilly books and video content are top notch, the delivery through this app needs improvement.

Please Fix this App

I love Safari Books; I use it daily; but it doesnt work properly on iOS. The design is outdated and the usability is not the best, but the most annoying feature is that it crashes all the time. Try to add books to a folder; you have to do it one by one and on the second or third book it crashes. Try to search for books; it crashes. Try to move book between folders; it crashes. And there it goes, crash after crash... getting worst at every new release of iOS.

Agree with other reviews

I wonder if the company is interested in fixing the app. Reviews goes all the way to 2011 says app got many problem!!!!

WORST APP FOREVER

Dont know who design this app. I fail to log in from university. The mobile version is junk. The character is blunt. The person who made it should be fired.

Software Development - Done Wrong

You do have to wonder whether the developers responsible for this pathetic failure of an app have access to Safaris software development content. In any event, its obvious that no testing is ever performed.

Keep crashing

This keep crashing not sure why organization(s) still keep using this.

Very unresponsive app, not ready for release yet

I was expecting a much better experience. First I thought that the user experience is very poor, the app doesnt take advantage of the features offered by the iPad, like landscape view, the touch interface. You need to tap on buttons most of the time while browsing. Second, its unresponsive. Like when you download books to your bookbag, there is no progress bar to give you informations about the download progress. You are not sure if its downloading under the hood. And even after waiting for a while under a high speed wifi network, its seems like nothing is going on. Sometimes when you open your Favorites, you see nothing. No folders, no book, I mean nothing. Third, I dont understand the start page. The purpose to have this app installed in your iPad is not to browse for new books, but to have a quick access to your bookshelf. This app doesnt start by displaying your bookshelf. It will download some data to show you new books and stuffs, which might be frustrating when you are using a slow 3G connection. Its kind of frustrating to use this app now. I will wait for the next version and see. Since its free, give it a try at least and see for yourself. Im going back to the web version with safari....

Huge improvement!

The latest version is a huge improvement over the previous one. Its as responsive as any other app and has a much more intuitive UI. Ive been waiting for this update for a long time. Great job!
